American Stafforshire Terrier
The American Staffordshire Terrier is confident, relaxed and easygoing. Poor breeding has meant the breed has gained a reputation for being aggressive. Though quite a laid back dog, it is probably best for those with some previous experience of dog ownership. It will get on well with older, sensible children and should be supervised with other dogs. Can be aggressive towards other pets, such as cats or rabbits.
The attitude to strangers can vary from being friendly to very reserved. Training can be difficult, but an assertive, positive trainer can achieve wonders with this intelligent dog. They tend to be very trusting and loyal, but can also be determined and tough.
The height of the American Staffordshire Terrier is around 17-19 inches and weighs around 40-75 pounds. The short, smooth coat is simple to look after. The coloring of these dogs can vary and include blue, fawn, brindle, red, and white with patches of color. The dogs ears are either cropped or uncropped, naturally folding over the head.
This dog is not a heavy shedder and his coat only needs the occasional brush. Give the coat a rub with a damp cloth to keep it in good condition, bathing only when necessary.
The life expectancy of the American Staffordshire Terrier is around 10-12 years. Common health problems include eye problems, ligament problems, thyroid disorders, cancer, temperament problems, and cataracts.
The American Staffordshire Terrier originates in the USA, and was developed as a result of breeding bulldogs and terriers. This breed was once known as the American Pit Bull Terrier, but then became known as the American Staffordshire Terrier.
