Belgian Shepherd Groenendael

Originating from the village Groenendael in Belgian, this dog has a history of duty and accomplishment. It has worked for police forces all over the world, helping to capture drug smugglers and criminals as well as proving as a very useful utility in wars. In World War I, the Groenendael was used for message carrying, ambulance dogs and even pulling machine guns.

This dog is highly versatile due to his ability to fit in as a working police dog and at the same time, make a great family pet. He is a highly intelligent animal and therefore needs a lot of socialization and mental stimulation, so it is recommended that he is kept around people and not locked up outside on his own. Also, this high energy working dog needs daily walks and an authoritative trainer. This dog makes a great companion for the right owners who are willing to put in time, love and attention.

This breed boasts a lush black mane that requires daily brushing and combing if it is to be kept in good condition. Also, extra care should be applied during shedding season. Be sure to check the ruff of his legs, between his toes and around his ears to clip out any mats that may form.

With an overall robust health, this dog only has a few minor health worries such as epilepsy, skin allergies and eye problems. However, make sure you do not overfeed him as he may become lazy and obese!
