German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is a breed of large-sized dog and originates from Germany. With their origins only dating back to 1899, they are a fairly new breed of dog. They are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep.
They are powerful, clever and obedient dogs which sees them often employed in Police and military roles, in forces around the world. They are popular as pets and guard dogs as they tend to be loyal and protective.
Shepherds were specifically bred for their intelligence which makes them very useful in certain situations. After Border Collies and Poodles, they are the most intelligent dog breed.
The dogs can be multiple colours, the most common of which are the tan and black and red and black (shown) varieties. Rarer variations include sable, all-black, all-white, liver and blue. German Shepherds have a double coat, the outer coat is shed all year round,
is close and dense with a thick undercoat. The long-hair gene is recessive meaning it's much rarer.
