Leonberger

Developed in 1846 by a German man named Heinrich Essing, the Leonberger was created by crossing the Newfoundland, St.bernard and the Great Pyrenees - Essing's hope was to create a dog that resembled a lion. It is appropriately named after the the place were it was first established in Leonberg, Germany. Throughout history, it has been sought after by royalty such as Napoleon II of France and the Prince of Wales. It was almost totally wiped out during World War II, but through careful breeding, the breed was re-established in 1945.

This gentle giant is lovable, patient and trustworthy. He loves everyone, including children, and is devoted to his owners. He gets on well with other dogs and rarely ever shows aggression, but instead walks away from the situation. Training takes patience and he does not respond well to harsh methods, and it is also important to note that due to his large size and vast strength, he should be taught from an early age not to jump up or pull on a lead. He needs a confident owner who obtains a natural authority due to the fact that this breed may develop behavioural problems.

His luscious coat needs to be carefully taken care of with a weekly brushing and de-matting - check the tail, feathering on the legs and behind the ears for mats. His ears and teeth need to be kept clean and he needs bathing only when necessary. He doesn't need large amounts of exercise but a daily walk is required. He also loves to hike, swim and pull carts, however, like all giant breeds, he should not be overworked whilst he is still growing and developing (up to 18 months old).

This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, eyelid defects and skeletal diseases or disorders.
