Lowchen
The Lowchen is also known as the Little Lion Dog, and has a long wavy coat. This breed is known to be sociable and affectionate with plenty of character. They make perfect family pets as they are great with children, love to play and thrive on attention. Lowchens are easily trained as they are intelligent and learn quickly, therefore they are well suited to inexperienced dog owners.
The Lowchen has a very mild manner but can be timid if they are not well socialized at an early age. Lowchens as with many small dogs have a tendency to bark a lot, however this may make him an effective watchdog.
The exercise requirements for this dog breed are low, however it is not a breed suitable for those with a lack of time as these dogs need a substantial amount of attention and mental stimulation.
The Lowchen is short and compact dog with a long wavy coat. Their coat varies in colour from black/tan, chocolate/tan to cream, gold, white and black. The Lowchen is around 9-18 pounds (4-8 kg) in weight, and reaches around 10-13 inches (25-33 cm) in height.
The Lowchen is a high maintenance breed in terms of grooming and will need to be brushed three or four times a week and they should be professionally clipped every six weeks. The Lowchen sheds very little hair and as such is a good breed for allergy sufferers.
The average life expectancy of the Lowchen is around 13-16 years. There are only a few health issues common to this breed which is in general fairly healthy. These include PRA, cataract, luxating patella, and possible allergies. The parents of the Lowchen puppy should have OFA and CERF certificates.
