Newfoundland
The Newfoundland is a large dog with a wonderful temperament, they have an affectionate nature and a loyalty towards their owners. They require plenty of attention but will also give plenty back in return and due to their gentle nature they make great family pets. They are not that easily trained however as they can be stubborn but they are an intelligent breed.
Due to their size this breed will need to live somewhere with plenty of space and they also require regular, vigorous exercise. They also tend to be quite a messy dog when eating and drinking and will need daily brushing when shedding, as such this is quite a high maintenance breed.
Whilst this breed has a mild and sweet nature they can be aggressive towards dogs of the same sex but they will get along well with other animals, strangers and children. Early socialisation is recommended however to ensure there is no over dominance or timidity which can run in some lines.
The Newfoundland is a strong and sturdy dog with a thick wavy coat which varies in colour from black to bronze. Dogs stand at around 27-29 inches (69-74cm) while Bitches are around 25-27 inches (63-69cm) tall. Dogs weigh 130-150 pounds (59-68 kg) and Bitches weigh 100-120 pounds (45-54kg).
The life expectancy of a Newfoundland is approximately 10 years and there is a number of health problems commonly associated with this breed, including: thyroid problems, heart problems, OCD, hip dysplasia, and heatstroke in humid or hot conditions. Newfoundland puppies should have OFA certificates.
The Newfoundland originates from Canada, and was developed to work alongside fishermen hauling in nets, retrieving items from the sea and helping in rescue attempts of the shipwrecked.
