Rottweiller
The Rottweiler is a large breed originally used in Germany for herding dogs. It was also used to carry wood and other products to market and was a guard dog in the first and second world wars. Nowadays they are used as police and guard dogs.
The colour is usually always black with tan or mahogany markings around the body. The coat is of medium length with a coarse top coat and a waterproof undercoat beneath. The coats tend to shed but are generally low maintenance. The average height of the Rottweiler is 56-68cm at the withers. Males are 50kg and females are 42kg. If trained, the Rottweiler can be reliable, alertand good natured. If untrained they can be dangerous especially if they don't have the mental stimulation they crave. As a working dog they love tasks and like human interaction. Its important to expose the dog to as many people and animals as possible as early social interaction can help imrove behaviour in the future. They can be strong-willed and should be trained in a firm and consistent manner, the owner must be perceived by the dog as the leader. If the owner fails to make themselves the leader the dog will readily take on the role.
The Rottweiler has a number of health issues that can affect it, such as bone problems, thyroid disorders and bloat.
