Yorkshire Terrier
Even though the Yorkshire Terrier is a toy breed, it still retains much of its terrier ancestry in terms of personality. The dogs tend to be intelligent, independent and courageous. They often bark at strangers so you'll know when someone is at the front door!
In the past the terrier has been used by mill workers or miners to catch rats. They were brought down from Scotland and bred with dogs in the North of England forming the Yorkshire Terrier. They began to be popular pets in the Victorian times and shrewd breeders started to reduce the terriers size and sell them for large sums of money.
The terriers hair can grow very long, so unless you want to show him try to keep it fairly short. Showing terriers can involve lots of work grooming the dog and keeping his hair free from mud and tangles.
Many famous people have owned Yorkshire Terriers, including Audrey Hepburn. Justin Timberlake has 2 and model Gisele Budchen takes hers to every photo shoot!
